Regelmatig krijg ik de vraag waarom ik toch die leuke dingetjes in mijn breiwerk heb hangen en wat het zijn?! Het zijn dus steekmarkeerders en ze helpen me met heel veel dingen. Neem bijvoorbeeld dit breiwerk, Trees. Ze heeft wel 3 steekmarkeerders! En soms zitten ze alle 3 ook nog eens bijna op dezelfde steek… beetje overdadig, of toch niet?

Frequently I get asked why I have those cute thingies in my knit projects and what they are?! They are stitch markers and help me in many ways. For instances in this project, Trees. She has 3 stitch markers! And sometimes all 3 of them they are in almost the same stitch… a bit much, or not?

Niet dus! Want ze dienen allemaal hun eigen doel. De eerste, met de twee ringetjes zit om de rondbreinaald zelf. Deze zorgt ervoor dat ik precies weet wanneer ik een volledig rondje heb gebreid. Bij rondbreien zie je namelijk heel moeilijk wat de eerste steek ik en als die markeerder er niet zou zitten, dan zou ik echt niet weten waar ik zou zijn in mijn breiwerk.

Not! Because they all serve their own purpose. First, with the two rings around the circular needle. This one makes sure that I know when I knitted a full round. With knitting in the round you don’t see the first stitch so if this marker wouldn’t be there, I would have no clue where I am in my project.

De tweede met de polkadots is om mijn voortgang aan te geven, een zgn. progress keeper – voortgangs markeerder. Dat vind ik prettig, want dan weet ik dat ik voortgang maak en niet stil sta in dit project en ik kan laten zien in de podcast hoeveel ik gedaan heb in de afgelopen 2 weken.

The second one with polkadots is to show my progress, a so called progress keeper. I like that, because it shows me I’m making progress and I’m not stalled on the project. And of course I can show in the podcast how much I did in the past 2 weeks.

En dan die derde, dat rare lampvormige ding. Die maakt mij het tellen gemakkelijk! Elke 25 toeren doe ik een toer met een werkje, dus of gaatjes of averecht. Zo hoef ik niets steeds te zoeken wat nou de eerste toer is, tel ik gewoon vanaf de markeerder en is het zo gedaan.

And then the third, the weird light bulb shaped thingie. That one makes counting easy! Every 25 rounds I do something different, like a row how little holes or a purl row. That way I don’t have to look which one is the first round and I can just count from the marker and it’s very easy.

Tevens is dat type steekmarkeerder evenals de progress keeper met het haakje heel fijn om in je werk te hebben. Als je en steek laat vallen kun je die met zo’n sluitende steekmarkeerder even vasthouden tot je op het punt bent dat je het kunt repareren. Zo hoef je niet bang te zijn dat je steek verder uitrafelt.

Also this light bulb stitch marker and the progress keeper are very handy to have with you always. If you dro a stitch you can catch it with these locking stitch markers and hold until you can fix your mistake. That way you don’t have to be afraid it unravels.

Ja maar Carolien, ik brei niet, ik haak, dus dan heb ik er niks aan! Ehm nee! Bovenstaande kun je ook zeker met een haakwerk doen hoor! Denk maar aan amigurumi of rond haken van een kleedje of tas. Of dat je wilt zien hoeveel voortgang je hebt. En wat te denken van je haakwerk meenemen of thuis op de bank leggen met de katten in de buurt, je pakt het weer op en hoppa heel stuk uitgerafeld of de naald is eruit gevallen en je lusje is weg… Met een steekmarkeerder met haakje kun je dat voorkomen door je werklusje met de steekmarkeerder vast te zetten. Zo hou je je lus open en kun je je naald los halen. Voor haken kun je wel alleen de sluitende steekmarkeerders gebruiken, want degene met een oogje zijn echt specifiek voor om breinaalden.

Yes but Carolien, I don’t knit, I crochet, so I can’t do anything with these things! Ehm no! Above mentioned is also very nice for crochet! Think of amigurumi or crochet in the round with a bag or doily. Or you want to see your progress. And what to think of taking your crochet or leaving it on the couch in a room with cats around, you get it back and you see there is a lot unraveled, or you needle fell and your loop is gone… With a stitch marker you can prevent that by putting it through the loop and secure it. That way you can keep the loop open and you can take your needle out. For crochet however, you can only use the locking stitch markers, because the ring ones are specifically for knitting needles.

En denk je, ik haak én ik brei niet, dan kun je de steekmarkeerder altijd nog als wisselhangertjes dragen aan een ketting! Ook handig als je wel haakt en/of breit want zo heb je ze altijd bij de hand 😉

And if you think, I don’t crochet AND I don’t knit, well then you can use the stitch markers as little charms on a necklace! Also handy if you do crochet and/or knit, because you will always have them at hand 😉
